Providing a year round benefit, tailoring your space to be an eco-friendly unit is not only great for the environment, but it is also a great for your pocket book. One of the best times to invest into saving energy is during the summer months, so it is important to capitalise on the time we have left! With costs always on the rise and the summer months almost over, there has never been a better time to consider some basic tips that are sure to help save on your energy.
Make sure your tank and pipes are insulated
When you first read this, you probably think you have to be a professional to do this, but actually it is a very simple and inexpensive way to reduce cost. For around £15 you can buy a jacket for your water tank, which has the possibility to save you about £45 a year on your energy bill. While that may not seem like a significant savings, it definitely adds up over years spent in your house!
Outdated TRV’s and Old Boilers
Changing your boiler is an expense that has the potential to at you back around £2000. Of course if you have the budget to do this, modern boilers are much more energy efficient and can cut your energy bill down by around £300. Even more, to save as much as you possibly can it may be worth investing into changing out your ‘Thermostatic Radiator Valves’. This is the bit that is a self-regulated valve attached to your boiler that controls the temperature of the room by adjusting the flow of hot water to a radiator. These have been drastically improved on over time, so replacing them can definitely be worth the cost.
If your loft or roof space haven’t been insulated, then it is imperative you invest into this. Of course this depends on every individual case how you want to treat it. Properly insulating your loft and/or roof controls more than you may realise as the heat and cool can easily escape a home that isn’t properly insulated. This wastes energy and runs up your bill.
Most homes have draughts. Investigate where draughts are occurring in your space and visit your local DIY store to get the necessary equipment to eliminate it. Don’t overdo it by insulating spaces that need ventilation, like bathrooms or kitchens.
Another expensive endeavour, you may want to consider this if you have old windows that don’t fit properly. For properties that are listen, there may be contingencies that you have to overcome, but it is definitely a strong point to consider if you’re windows are in need of service!
Annual Boiler Service
A must for everyone, regardless the type of boiler you have, having your boiler serviced every year is essential to saving on your energy bill. It is a great way to make sure your boiler is running as efficiently as possible and that your boiler is still healthy!
